$MSFT (-6.52%) The company will release its first-quarter results for fiscal year 2027 today after the U.S. stock market closes. I hold the stock in my portfolio and am convinced of the company’s long-term quality. Still, it will be interesting to see how much growth $MSFT (-6.52%) with AI, and how quickly will the necessary investments pay for themselves?
My Key Watchouts:
- Azure growth & capacity bottlenecks: Azure remains the most important indicator for me. Can $MSFT (-6.52%) it sustain its recent strong growth? At the same time, I’m interested in the extent to which a lack of computing capacity is limiting growth. High demand is positive, but it must also be met and converted into revenue.
- Capex & Return on Investment: Investments in data centers and AI infrastructure are rising dramatically. This raises the question of how quickly new capacity becomes operational and whether the additional investments will generate attractive returns in the long term.
- Monetization of Copilot: How is paid usage of Microsoft 365 Copilot developing? $MSFT (-6.52%) has an enormous sales advantage thanks to its enterprise customers. Now it remains to be seen whether this will result in significant additional revenue and recurring income.
- Margins & Free Cash Flow: To what extent are the high investments weighing on cash generation? I’m watching to see whether the operating margin and free cash flow keep pace with growth over the long term.
- Outlook & Order Backlog: How is demand for cloud capacity evolving, and how resilient are the long-term order backlogs? I’m particularly interested in whether the outlook for Azure keeps pace with rising investments.
My Conclusion: $MSFT (-6.52%) combines a strong cloud business, established enterprise software, and enormous opportunities in the AI market. For me, the key question is now less whether AI is growing, but rather whether $MSFT (-6.52%) can generate attractive returns on invested capital from this over the long term. At the same time, I want to see that revenue growth, monetization, and cash flow keep pace with rising investments over the long term.
