Investing morals

Hello all,

discussions about "moral investing" are often sparked on many channels.

I have received one or two comments like this one:

"How can you support the oil industry?".

But I am also a bad boy 😇 I am not only a Shell shareholder, but I am also invested in British American Tobacco, one of the largest tobacco companies in the world.

I am not at all a fan of smoking and have never even tried it. Why did I still decide to invest in this sector 2 years ago? Because I soberly analyzed the company and have been using it as a decent cash flow provider ever since.

The same can of course be mirrored to other industries, alcohol, armaments, gambling....

I think it is always up to personal discretion. Everyone should decide for himself which investments he can represent or not.

How do you stand on this topic?

As long as I feel good about my investments etc. I don't care about the opinion of others; this is my money I work for and invest for my plans, my future and my life and not for the opinion of others.

Can be a difficult topic, I once had a long discussion here with @Europoor about Caterpillar and the use of construction equipment in Gaza/Palestine. I always have to evaluate such things from situation to situation, e.g. with Vale I first wanted to know where their mines are in Brazil and do not participate in the deforestation of the rainforest, etc.

Difficult topic. Phew... But for the most part, I agree that everyone should invest in what they want (and so should they, of course...). I am also invested in Shell and Imperial Brands, for example, even though the tobacco sector in particular is not for me and is also very questionable from a health point of view...

There is nothing more to add to this. 👍🏼

As you say, it's up to each person to decide for themselves. Basically, most people are invested via ETFs anyway. Nevertheless, I don't want to have certain companies in my portfolio via individual shares.

You've done everything right: the appetite for sinful shares is unbroken. There is even a fund that invests exclusively in stocks like the one you described. I don't have the name of the fund at hand. Energy, intoxication and armaments are always on the rise, even if the #ESG fanboys say otherwise. I'm going to invest in prison stocks (Geo Group, etc.) shortly before the next US election. If Trump wins the race, it will be a good investment.

The only taboo for me is tobacco industry. Petroleum, armaments, etc. have a raison d'être and a benefit. The cancer industry has no benefit from my point of view. But I don't condemn anyone for his investments. Everyone as he likes.
