@Der_Dividenden_Monteur No, in NRW. We also work in a completely different field of research (molecular biology and ecology). But after years in industry, it's exciting to work for a research institute and visiting other institutes always gives you an insight into a wide variety of research fields. I can only recommend it.

@SteelAnacott Yes, I can confirm that it's sick shit what Fraunhofer sometimes does 😅
See EUV laser, the first focusing mirrors were turned on our machine and what they get out of the machine is really unbelievable.

I actually think it's a shame that Fraunhofer publishes so little. That would counteract the stupid chatter against Germany as a business location

@Der_Dividenden_Monteur After all, Fraunhofer is "only" 30% funded. The rest has to be generated through contracts from public sponsors or industry. On the one hand, this is positive because, as a service provider for applied research, we have a close connection to industry and it is not just about theoretical feasibility studies but about developing things that have real (medium-term) applications and it is also our aim to train scientists for other institutions.
But at least the industrial clients rarely want to publish these results because they see their investment at risk.
In addition, our scientists also spend a lot of time on acquisition and training. Quite apart from the fact that they also have to manage employees in their laboratory. They are virtually scientists, managers and sales staff all in one. Unfortunately, that doesn't leave much time for publications. However, if there is an opportunity to publish results as part of a project, they will do so. As a controller, I get to see quite a bit.
But you're right, we could represent Germany more effectively in the public eye. There have also been some changes in our Executive Board recently. From what I've heard so far, that's a point that we want to address. I think I can say that here.
