Do NFTs even still exist? I thought that would have been history long ago.

In theory, you could also use base64 to store the images. That would not be a link. But NFTs are only a means to an end, namely quick FOMO-driven money, at least for the images. The interesting use cases such as tickets or proof of ownership for real estate or similar are not so much in focus.
