Landmark decision expected in glyphosate dispute
The U.S. Supreme Court will consider whether to accept a challenge from Bayer in a glyphosate case this Friday. Whether the judges will accept the landmark case for trial is then expected to be announced on Monday (Dec. 13).
The decision is of immense importance for the progress of the legal conflicts surrounding the weedkiller glyphosate. Bayer had brought the problems surrounding the glyphosate-containing plant poison Roundup into the house with the more than $60 billion purchase of the U.S. seed giant Monsanto.
A supreme court decision in favor of Bayer would be tantamount to a liberating blow for the DAX-listed company. The German company hopes that it will then be able to basically put an end to the glyphosate disputes. The focus is primarily on possible future lawsuits.
In the event that the Supreme Court does not want to deal with the glyphosate case or ultimately rules against Bayer, the company set aside provisions of $4.5 billion in the summer. Bayer would then use the money to set up a program to deal with the claims of new plaintiffs over the next 15 years.
Do you think Bayer has a chance of a better future?
