Veeva Systems: Invisible, indispensable, highly profitable?

$VEEV (+0,24%)

The pharmaceutical industry is considered complex, strictly regulated and difficult to digitize. A specialist is needed to change this: Veeva.

Digitalization in a highly regulated industry

Digitalization does not stop at conservative sectors such as the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry. Veeva Systems has established itself as an indispensable partner in this highly specialized sector.

The company offers cloud-based software solutions that are precisely tailored to the complex requirements of the life sciences sector.

Unlike generic software providers that sell cross-industry solutions, Veeva addresses the strict regulatory hurdles of the pharmaceutical industry. The platform covers the entire life cycle of a drug.

This cycle begins in early research, goes through the lengthy clinical trials and ends with the commercialization and distribution of the finished product.

The integration of these different phases into a uniform and secure ecosystem creates massive efficiency gains for customers.

Very special needs

Veeva Vault is a central building block for success. This is far more than just a simple cloud storage solution for Dokumente. Vault is a content management platform designed specifically for regulatory compliance.

Pharmaunternehmen must document every step of development and marketing in an audit-proof manner. Authorities such as the FDA in the USA or the EMA in Europe require complete proof of data integrity and process flows.

Veeva Vault automates these compliance requirements and enables companies to securely manage documents and data while streamlining collaboration between internal departments and external partners. Reducing compliance risks is invaluable for pharmaceutical companies, as violations can lead to heavy fines or loss of marketing authorization.

At the same time, the Veeva Clinical Cloud optimizes the execution of clinical trials. This area is traditionally one of the biggest cost factors and time wasters in drug development. By digitizing study planning, data collection and patient protocol tracking, Veeva accelerates these critical processes.

Why pharmaceutical distribution works differently

On the commercial side, the Veeva Commercial Cloud and Veeva CRM support sales and marketing strategies. Selling pharmaceuticals is fundamentally different from selling traditional goods. Pharmaceutical sales representatives have to communicate complex medical information while complying with legal requirements. Veeva provides the necessary tools for this.

The business is not capital intensive, is easily scalable, is characterized by recurring revenues and has strong customer loyalty.

This moat is the key factor in the company's valuation: once Veeva's systems are implemented and become part of the workflow, the switching costs are enormous.

Customers generally subscribe to the software solutions via multi-year contracts. This gives the company a high degree of planning security and makes sales robust even in difficult economic times.

Land and Expand

Veeva's strategy is based on proven patterns of success in the software industry. The parallels with the former parent company Salesforce are unmistakable. Veeva pursues a classic land-and-expand strategy.

The customer relationship often begins with a single module, such as the CRM system or a specific Vault application. As soon as the system is established, Veeva successively sells further modules to the same customer.

By constantly developing new services around the existing core products, Veeva continuously increases the revenue per customer.

All these factors have contributed to Veeva's massive increase in turnover from USD 409 million to USD 2.75 billion over the past ten years.

At the same time, profitability has improved and earnings have climbed from USD 0.51 to USD 6.60 per share and free cash flow from USD 0.41 to USD 6.47 per share.

Figures that speak for themselves

The strong development has continued in the current financial year, even if the share price performance does not give any indication of this.

Veeva has exceeded expectations in all three quarters, but the reactions to this have been very different.

In many cases, the share price reaction has little to do with the company itself, but rather with the underlying conditions and general sentiment - and this seems to be the case here too.

Examples that prove this are a dime a dozen.

The developments in 2022, when shares such as Alphabet, Netflix, Meta, Microsoft and many more crashed, even though the business was performing well. Back then, no quarter could be good enough, but things still went downhill.

Expectations exceeded, forecast raised

Veeva's earnings of USD 2.04 per share in the last quarter were well above expectations of USD 1.95. With sales of USD 811 million, analysts' estimates of USD 792 million were also exceeded.

For the year as a whole, this corresponds to a 16% increase in sales and a 17% jump in profits.

Overall, operating cash flow increased from USD 1.02 billion to USD 1.31 billion in the first nine months.

The company is also making great progress in the field of AI. The first agents have probably been in use with customers since the beginning of December.

At least as impressive, however, is the fact that the company has acquired 23 new customers for Vault CRM - bringing the total number to 115.

This is excellent news because, as already described, the switching costs for customers are very high. So when they switch from other providers to Veeva, it's a big step. In addition, the usual customers in this area are not SMEs, but large corporations.

Veeva has therefore raised its sales forecast for the current financial year from USD 3.13 - 3.14 billion to USD 3.16 - 3.20 billion and its operating result from USD 1.39 billion to USD 1.42 billion.

The company is forecasting earnings per share of USD 7.93 instead of USD 7.78, which corresponds to an increase of 20%.

This gives Veeva a forward P/E of 27.8, compared with an average P/E of 53 over the last five years and over 60 for many years.

If earnings rise by 9% to USD 8.64 per share next year, as expected, the P/E would fall to 25.5.

There is a high probability that the estimates are too low - as this has always been the case in the last 20 quarters.

This has triggered the share price collapse

The only tangible argument as to why the share price plummeted after this news is the following:

Veeva is in the midst of a transition. Originally, the CRM system was based on Salesforce technology. Now Veeva is migrating its customers to its own, self-developed Vault platform.

This step is strategically essential in order to end the dependency on Salesforce and increase profitability, as license fees will no longer be paid externally.

In the course of this changeover, 14 of the 20 largest pharmaceutical customers worldwide opted for an immediate migration. The fact that 6 decided against it sounds dramatic, but it is not.

Large pharmaceutical companies often have IT cycles of 10 years or more. The decision not to migrate from Vault CRM at this point in time does not necessarily mean switching to the competition, but rather sticking with legacy systems.

The management emphasizes that these decisions will also not have a significant impact on sales in the 2026 and 2027 financial years.

At the same time, the targets for 2030 have been confirmed: Veeva continues to aim for a turnover of USD 6 billion, which would roughly correspond to a doubling.

Veeva has undergone a painful correction and a large part of the annual gains have been given back. Between USD 220 and USD 200, the Unterstützungen are literally lined up.

It is quite possible that the share will bottom out in this range. It is also possible that the upward trend will be tested.

If it manages to return above USD 230, this could trigger a recovery towards USD 250 or USD 266.

No, I waited too long in the last setback and after that the share was always a bit too expensive for me compared to the peers. I like the support between 160-180$
