WAYMO: "TESLA WAS RIGHT, WE WASTED YEARS"

$TSLA (-0,58%) Waymo has released a new research paper that basically says this: if you want smarter self-driving cars, you simply need to throw more data and computing power at the problem.

That's exactly what Tesla has been doing for years - ditching traditional methods, building gigantic AI supercomputers and collecting data non-stop with their fleet of vehicles.

Corry Wang, who heads up the computing infrastructure at Anthropic, put it in a nutshell:

"Waymo was wrong. Tesla was right."

Badass.

If this proves to be true, Tesla could be on the verge of a GPT-3-like level-up in autonomous driving - while Waymo is just watching in the rear-view mirror.

The fact is: Waymo is already driving, Tesla is not yet.

@Barrd The fact is: Apple didn't have the first tablet either and is now the market leader

@bullish999 true, but I would still be careful with Tesla. So far it's all just hot air and more hot air

@Barrd waymo has the more expensive system. If Tesla's system proves to be safe and functional, they can scale up much faster. This is not possible with the waymo fleet due to the cost.

@Barrd this is not an argument in favor of waymo - horse-drawn carriages existed before the automobile

@Barrd Who cares who wins a battle if the war is lost?

@Barrd Is Tesla still not driving?

Just do like VW: don't tell a lot of fairy tales, just do it!!! And you also have data from millions of vehicles on top... P/E ratio: not something with over 100 but 4.xx

@Klein-Anleger1 In fact, VW is so good at modernizing their vehicles that they take over everything from Rivian $RIVN in a few years instead of developing something of their own.

@Klein-Anleger1 exactly and off with all the data to the Internet https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHsz6jzjbRc

There are certainly many things that count at the VW Group, but the mantra "just do it" is not one of them.

We're all going to see the Robotaxi today, aren't we? I'm sure it will be just as great as all the Tesla disciples think. Because Musk has always kept his promises so far. Especially when it comes to deadlines ...

@Charmin did not age well

@Lvca

"The carmaker's first robotaxi service launches with just a few cars and escorts."

I think my comment has actually aged excellently.

Robotaxi, my ass. It's a Model Y with a driver. Other people say the same thing:

Cab.

@Lvca Also nice to read: "Tesla Misses Robotaxi Launch Date, Goes With Safety Drivers"

https://www.forbes.com/sites/bradtempleton/2025/06/22/tesla-misses-robotaxi-launch-date-goes-with-safety-drivers/

What Tesla is doing was started by Waymo in 2009. Yes, you read that right: 2009, that was 16 years ago.

Tesla is many years away from offering anything in the way of FSD. And only if they change the technology.

My comment matures better than a '95 Rothschild ...

@Charmin Take a look at it first before you write anything. The car was driving completely autonomously (unsupervised). The passenger was not at the wheel. There is only a pull over and stop button which Waymo also has.
1
immagine del profilo
@Charmin Tesla has not missed the date and the safety driver is not a real safety driver because he has no way to take the wheel. If Waymo is so great, why is their service area only twice as big after 16 years as Tesla's is now?
1
immagine del profilo
@Lvca

*Of course* they threw the date. It said:

Without steering wheel. Without pedals. Without ANYONE (whether someone intervenes as a driver or passenger is completely irrelevant. A security driver is also a driver) on board.

None of that is there. Ergo: Appointment canceled. The robotaxi as announced is not there. Period.

And to answer your question about Waymo: That should be warning enough - they've been tinkering with it for 16 years. Tesla is years, many years behind.
1
immagine del profilo
@Charmin There was never any talk of that. It was called Model Y not Cybercab. What's so bad about the car still having a steering wheel? Doesn't Waymo have one too? The only thing that matters is that it drives. Cybercab is simply an add-on for the future.
1
@Lvca You're wasting a lot of time on those monkeys, er, bears.

I think I read something last time,
where it was the other way around and that Tesla is totally lagging behind with its cameras,
I have the feeling that nothing will happen for a very long time,
no matter which manufacturer...

This article must be quickly framed and canceled, can't be what can't be 🤣

@user28461 I rather think the post is already framed. Nobody at Waymo has said that.
1
immagine del profilo
@Lvca Exactly: not a single sentence says that Tesla is right. Tesla is not mentioned once in the text.

Nobody at Waymo said anything about Tesla.
2
immagine del profilo
@Charmin It should be clear to everyone that Waymo would never say something like that directly. But they have indirectly said that Tesla's process is the future
1
immagine del profilo
@Lvca They didn't say that directly (as conveyed by your headline) or indirectly. You may read it that way, but that's just typical fanboy wishful thinking and bias.

No, Waymo has nothing of the sort, because such a statement would be total nonsense. Tesla's "process" of relying exclusively on cameras cannot possibly work so well that more than "monitored" FSD will be possible. It will not be completely autonomous.

I know, I know, the Tesla boys don't want to hear facts, but Tesla will never, ever, ever get FSD approved with current technology. It can't work safely.

Will there be a few Robotaxis driving around (not real Robotaxis, of course, but Model Ys, but who pays attention to details)? Quite possibly, you can still control something like that to some extent. But that's about it. It will never scale. Never. Not in this universe.
1
@Charmin That's exactly how it is, and nothing else. While Mercedes has long been driving level 3 on German highways, Tesla is still making phantom brakes and creaking noises at every bump.
Elon Musk has just completely lost his way with the Vision Only nonsense and is dragging his entire company into the abyss with this crap.
How you can safely drive autonomously with such a concept in the rain, in slush, in the dark or with dirty cameras (and everyone knows that the reversing camera in a Model Three, for example, is permanently dirty!!!) is probably only clear to you if you're on a lot of ketamine and then have a good joint: like Elon.
2

@Gomerdoc Bad weather conditions are fair, it works in the dark and there are windshield wipers for the cameras https://x.com/sawyermerritt/status/1936997202880081950?s=46
1
immagine del profilo
Tesla will never be able to FSD as long as only cameras are used. Period.
2
immagine del profilo
@Charmin You are wrong. Period. Is someone else walking around blindfolded in front of your vehicle and scanning everything because their brain and eyes aren't enough? Question mark.
immagine del profilo
@robiin If you don't understand that it is IMPOSSIBLE to do FSD with cameras only, I recommend (among other things) this video. It makes at least part of the reasoning clear. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQJL3htsDyQ

A car whose cameras can't distinguish a *picture* of a road from a real road certainly does a lot of things. But certainly not FSD.
immagine del profilo
@Charmin And to what extent does this pose a risk in normal everyday life? Oh right, when my neighbor once again carries his 10x10 meter street painting across the crosswalk. It's terrible how he can do that every week. From a few hundred meters away, you'd think it was real. Your arguments are bad.
immagine del profilo
@robiin This is just one example of many that illustrates that with cameras you don't really know what's out there and where.

There are everyday things like heavy rain or fog that make cameras completely useless because it would be far too risky to rely on cameras alone. Just watch the video and it will become very clear very quickly.
immagine del profilo
@Charmin Does Waymo drive when it's foggy?
immagine del profilo
More data on the problem: Tesla only has the camera data. I don't think we'll see live remote control of the cars from a central Tesla AI in the cloud any time soon.

"There is always a safety driver in the passenger seat who can intervene during the journey. In addition, the cars are monitored remotely by a whole team of employees at a control center - and steered if necessary."

😂😂😂

So the "autonomous" car needs twice as many drivers as a normal cab?
1
immagine del profilo
@Portfoliopferd Difficult junctions are also blocked via geofencing 😅😅
immagine del profilo
@Portfoliopferd The "safety driver" cannot intervene at all, at most he can stop the car by pressing a button. Besides, this is only temporary. I'm pretty sure that this is also required by law, at least at the beginning. I don't understand what's wrong with playing it safe on release. If an accident were to happen, people would immediately complain that Tesla hadn't paid enough attention to safety.

Waymo's cars are also monitored remotely. Everyone who operates autonomous vehicles needs a control center through which the cars can be remotely controlled if they get stuck somewhere or don't know what to do (support).

I have both in the depot 😊
