Almonty Industries: The Growth Story Gains Momentum

$AII (-3,71%)

Hello everyone,

As some of you may have noticed, I invested in Almonty a few weeks ago. With today’s post, I’d like to give you a quick update.

Are you generally interested in updates on my investments?

Feel free to let me know in the comments.

At Almonty Industries , the real test is beginning. For years, the stock market story of this tungsten specialist was driven primarily by the prospects of the Sangdong Mine in South Korea. Now, that potential needs to translate into cash flow. Operations are going well. In the second quarter, revenue jumped 498% year-over-year to CAD 43.0 million. Earnings from the mining business improved from a loss of 0.9 million CAD to a profit of 26.1 million CAD, and adjusted EBITDA turned from a loss of 4.8 million CAD to a profit of 17.6 million CAD. The gross margin reached 60.7%. This is primarily due to the massive rise in the price of tungsten, from which the producing Panasqueira mine in Portugal benefits.

However, the quarterly profit of CAD 181.8 million should not yet be extrapolated. Approximately CAD 173.1 million was attributable to non-cash valuation gains from derivatives and warrants. More important for future performance is that CAD 31.6 million flowed in from ongoing operations in the first half of the year, compared to a outflow of CAD 14.9 million a year earlier. Almonty is thus, for the first time, more than just a bet on the future.

However, the real driver of growth remains South Korea. In Sangdong, the first phase of expansion is currently being commissioned. At full capacity, the plant is expected to produce approximately 640,000 metric tons of ore per year. An approved second phase could increase capacity to up to 1.2 million metric tons . The project ranks among the largest and highest-grade tungsten deposits outside of China. Tungsten is used in carbide tools, electronics, aviation, and defense. China controls the lion’s share of production and has restricted exports of select tungsten products. For Western buyers, security of supply is therefore becoming increasingly important.

The demand for Sangdong’s production is evident in the purchase agreement with Global Tungsten & Powders , part of the Plansee Group, which was expanded in July. The term was extended by six years, the volume increased by 40%, and the pricing formula improved by approximately 6.3%. This reduces marketing risk and provides Almonty with good revenue visibility. The second phase of expansion is not included—additional volumes remain freely marketable.

Following the placement of an oversubscribed convertible bond worth $800 million , the company had CAD 1.23 billion in cash. In the latest video, “Almonty Industries: The $800 Million Bet on Tungsten,” CEO Lewis Black how the new financial flexibility will be utilized. In addition to the ramp-up and expansion of Sangdong, the focus is on the expansion of the Panasqueira mine in Portugal, the Gentung project in Montana, and potential additional strategic assets. At the same time, Black puts the $800 million convertible bond and the geopolitical race for a tungsten supply independent of China into perspective.

Management sent a confident signal in mid-August. Through August 2029, up to 14.4 million treasury shares—just under 5% of the share capital—may be repurchased for a maximum of $300 million. However, the program is an authorization, not a mandatory purchase. The scope depends on the stock price, liquidity, and capital requirements.

Almonty is at an operational turning point. If the ramp-up at Sangdong is successful, revenue and earnings are likely to reach new heights. All in all, the stock remains a speculative hot stock —but its future price performance is now underpinned by operational progress, positive cash flow, and a well-stocked cash reserve. If the core business gains sustainable momentum with the ramp-up of Sangdong, Almonty’s stock still has significant upside potential for further price gains.

That's great—thanks for the update! I'm generally very interested whenever you post one 💪🏼 Especially when it comes to Almonty, since I've made $AII one of the six positions in my speculative portfolio. I think there's still a lot of potential there…

@Creutzfeldt_Jakob I'm also very optimistic about that. I think the rating is still pretty okay, too.

@Tenbagger2024 I agree. I'm thinking about buying a few more shares; right now, I only have a really small position (~€600; 40 shares).... 🤔

@Creutzfeldt_Jakob I'm waiting for a correction there. The RSI seems a little too high to me right now.

@Tenbagger2024 Yes, that's probably the most sensible approach—after all, there's usually no rush when it comes to $AII

Thanks for the info. With a 2% allocation in the portfolio, it's sufficiently represented for now... let's wait and see.

@Creutzfeldt_Jakob We already have a foot in the door. Statistically speaking, September isn't a good month for the stock market either. Maybe it'll pay off to be a little more patient.

@Tenbagger2024 Patience isn't really my strong suit here 😅

@Tenbagger2024, I only have a tiny position, but I'd be willing to add to it later. Thanks a lot for the tip.

I'd love to hear updates on your investments, since we have some overlap. By the way, I'm also invested in $AII.

@schlimmschlimm How long have you been invested?

@Tenbagger2024 I got in about 2–3 weeks ago. I'm currently up about 35%.
2

@schlimmschlimm had a good nose for it

@Tenbagger2024 Not necessarily—this was already discussed here about 5 months ago by @SAUgut777 and you, which is how it caught my attention and ended up on my watchlist. Commodity supercycle ;-)

@schlimmschlimm That's why we're discussing this in the community. Even though, unfortunately, more and more important content is getting lost here

@schlimmschlimm Don't make it smaller than you are... 35% is a good start, after all... but here I'm not thinking in terms of countercyclical behavior, but rather a long-term shortage of a critical raw material.

But that doesn't mean you should just buy blindly...

@Tenbagger2024 That's exactly why I'm here—because there's so much to learn. Of course, it would be a shame if there were fewer opportunities here.

@SAUgut777 Thanks, my friend... I'm making progress, but often it's the great posts here that lay the foundation. ;-)

@schlimmschlimm Well, then that works out just fine 😉

Since I’ve known since yesterday that we have some overlap, I’m naturally very interested in your updates. I’ve also been back on $AII for about 6 weeks now (July 17). I’d already traded it last year with a nice profit, even though I got out too early. This time around, the start has been promising again.

@Multibagger I had also asked you about two silver mines. But unfortunately, I didn't get a reply.

@Tenbagger2024 I still think $EDR is good. I haven't heard anything about the other one yet. But I'm not really caught up in the silver/commodities hype right now like I was last year. You know, my favorites change pretty quickly.

@Multibagger First, Iren has to get things going.

@Multibagger @Tenbagger2024 As for biopharma, I dug up $BMRN from a presentation 8 months ago by @Tenbagger2024. I think it's relevant and exciting again. And there's also photonics $IPGP

@Darkwingduck I increased it by another 10% today

I wouldn't necessarily view the whole venture as quite so speculative anymore...

...of course, there will still be volatility here, but with the South Korea facility coming online, Almonty should/will turn a profit for the first time, provided that the rest of the process goes relatively smoothly...

...by the way, the second phase is already planned for 2027, and the expansion plan is largely—if not entirely—funded by the bond issuance.

On top of that, there’s the factor of China-independent supply chains and the resulting shortages; above all, we all know just how many uses tungsten has...

...so, in my opinion, this isn’t really a big gamble, but rather a stock that will gradually and quietly (at least after the FOMO) develop on its own.

I’ll definitely be adding to my position here from time to time.

@SAUgut777 I'm optimistic about that, too. But I'm waiting for a correction before buying more.
