Tesla takes robotaxi to the next level

Texas update: Tesla has the green light to officially operate its Robotaxi network across Texas - without any human safety drivers. This officially allows autonomous rides via app.

@GeldGenie Do you really think this will stop technological progress? What happens when the data shows that it is safer than human driving, which causes several hundred thousand deaths on the roads every year?

@lordprettylambo Autonomous driving is safer than human driving - provided that everything drives autonomously.

As long as humans and machines have to react to each other's idiosyncrasies, there will be accidents involving autonomous driving. However, if everything really does drive autonomously, the accident rate could be reduced to an absolute minimum and travel extremely efficiently 👌🏼 I hope we see this happen one day

@lordprettylambo Yes and no. But the long-term vision of vehicle owners being able to rent out their vehicles autonomously as cabs raises the question of liability.

Even states/regulators have not yet drawn up clean laws here.

Autonomous driving is safer than human driving. Especially in the long term, as we (can hardly) improve our skills in this respect.

Exactly how many are coming now? Musk said 10-20 in the interview.....
Waymo, for example, already has almost 2,000 in trial operation.

Does the permit also apply in the dark and in bad weather? And if so, will Teslas allow the Robotaxis to drive?

@randomdude That depends on the conditions of the state license and in this case it doesn't seem to contain any explicit restrictions. So yes, legally they are allowed to drive at night and in bad weather. Whether Tesla will do this immediately is questionable. The rollout will probably be controlled and gradual.

What the autonomous Tesla cabs definitely lack is a humanoid robot at the wheel that talks to the passengers in a calming manner when the ride gets a little rough (similar to the Arnie classic Total Recall)

Interesting. As far as I know, Tesla has done something in a matter of weeks (all of Texas) that Waymo hasn't done in years. They're not (to my knowledge) allowed to just drive around everywhere in Texas, are they?
