Following the forecast increase the previous day, news of a hydrogen cooperation agreement provided a tailwind for MTU Aero Engines shares on Wednesday. Together with Airbus, the company intends to develop fuel cells for passenger aircraft. The share price jumps to the top of the DAX - to a new record high.
Hydrogen and flying have been unloved partners in recent months. At the beginning of the year, Airbus abandoned its plan to develop a hydrogen aircraft with around 100 seats by 2035. It would be much later, it was said at the time.
Now the surprise: at the world's largest aviation trade fair in Le Bourget near Paris, representatives of the two DAX companies Airbus and MTU signed a letter of intent to develop fuel cells for passenger aircraft.
For Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury, there is no question that a hydrogen airplane is technically feasible. However, there is no point in developing an aircraft that nobody buys because the infrastructure is not available or it is too expensive to operate, he said in the spring. The hydrogen economy is five to ten years behind what the Group assumed when it announced its hydrogen strategy in 2020, he said at the time.
The plan is to use a fuel cell that generates electricity using hydrogen. This in turn would then power the aircraft. An alternative in which a gas turbine burns hydrogen in a similar way to conventional jet aircraft burning kerosene has already been rejected.
At MTU, however, the year 2035 is still in sight - namely as part of the EU technology program 'Herops': this is about innovative technologies for a climate-neutral, hydrogen-powered electric drive "that can get regional aircraft into the air from 2035".
