My father always said, “Money ruins friendships,” and I’d reply, “If a friendship ends over money, it wasn’t worth anything.” The truth lies somewhere in between. If someone reaches out to me, I’m happy to help, but I would never take the initiative myself. That comes with its own set of risks. Twenty-five years ago, I tried to talk my best friend out of taking out a life insurance policy. No chance. Twenty years later, at least his kids have a brokerage account.
