Traffic lights spent hundreds of thousands of euros on make-up

$ELF (-1,62 %)
$OR (-0,41 %)

Hello my dears,

As an Elf Beauty investor, I hope that a lot of money has flowed into Elf's sales.

But given the large sum involved, I fear that Loreal was able to profit here.

Taxpayers are paying for the federal government's make-up costs. According to a media report, there are now some figures on the balance sheet of the traffic light and the red-green minority government.

According to a media report, the traffic light government spent at least 538,000 euros on make-up between the beginning of 2022 and the end of 2024. However, as "Bild" reported, citing government figures, this calculation did not include the styling costs incurred between May and December 2024 for former Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and her team at the Federal Foreign Office.

Under the red-green minority government, at least another 49,646 euros were added between the beginning of January 2025 and the end of March 2025, according to the report.

According to the report, Baerbock and her department also spent a particularly large amount of money on make-up during these three months. They would have spent a total of 20,849 euros on make-up in these three months. That's 7440 euros a month. According to Bild, former Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the Chancellery spent 13,015 euros.

Otherwise, the female ex-ministers and their departments are far ahead. Lisa Paus (Greens) and the Ministry of Family Affairs contributed costs of 4287 euros, the Ministry of the Interior led by ex-minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) 3737 euros and the Ministry of the Environment led by ex-minister Steffi Lemke (Greens) 3554 euros. Bringing up the rear were the Ministry of Construction (1999 euros), which was led by Klara Geywitz (SPD) at the time, and the Ministry of Economic Affairs (598 euros) with Robert Habeck (Greens) at the helm at the time.

None of the other ministries provided any information, which is why the total costs are not complete. Costs for hairstyling, clothing and photographers are not included, it is further stated.

Merkel spent 3000 euros a month on a stylist

By way of comparison, while Baerbock and her team invested around €7440 per month in make-up in 2025, former Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel, for example, had accumulated costs of around €3000 per month for the federal government after leaving office in 2023 - not only for make-up, but also for her hairstyle, mind you. This also included the hotel and travel costs of her stylist.

The Taxpayers' Association had massively criticized the rising costs of top politicians' appearances in the past. In 2023, President Reiner Holznagel said that taxpayers could not be expected to pay for politicians' make-up artists and hairstylists.

And it is not only make-up costs that cost taxpayers a lot of money, but also photographers. At state level, for example, the Bavarian state government led by Minister President Markus Söder (CSU) has recently attracted particular attention. Under him, the costs for photographers had multiplied compared to his predecessor Horst Seehofer, reported Der Spiegel in 2023.

In the first four months of the year alone, the State Chancellery reportedly spent around 75,000 euros - and that was just for freelance photographers. A permanently employed photographer was also on the pay slip, it said. In 2022, Söder spent around 220,000 euros, more than twenty times as much as Seehofer, said former SPD parliamentary group leader Florian von Brunn at the time. (Tsp)

@Dividendenopi You have no idea how scary politics would be without all the make-up! They don't do it for no reason. 🫨

Outrage journalism alla BLÖD? What did CumEx cost, for example, or the toll disaster, or what is the message? 🤷‍♂️

@Singulus
Soft populism with a stock market filter, nothing more.
Whataboutism. Just because CumEx and the toll disaster cost the taxpayer significantly more, I have to think the costs for the larvae are good or what?
Every cent spent on this nonsense does not go to needed sectors. Based on your comments, I can also understand the unbelievable political indifference of these people.

When those who call others "larvae" talk about morals, it's unintentionally funny. Sounds like criticism, but smells like resentment in a robe with residual alcohol.
5
@Yoshika I should probably start drinking if I'm going to be a smooth talker like you. It's a mystery to me how you can advocate these costs.

@financial_genius_68 The mystery is how you should use BLÖD as a reputable source for anything 😏.

I did not approve of anything. I merely pointed out that those who call others "larvae" are perhaps not the most credible moralizers.

@Singulus But I agree with you in that respect.

But once again, you can't just refer to the traffic lights.
For example, Markus Söder alone spends ~€200,000 on photographers every year.
In comparison, just over €500,000 in make-up costs for an entire government and an entire legislative period seems almost humane to me...

image de profil
@GuenDolf Doesn't Söder also pay for "his" museum with taxpayers' money?
image de profil
@Staatsmann I didn't even know that until just now... But yes, apparently ~€230,000 per year... You can't make this stuff up...
1
image de profil
@GuenDolf It's almost princely when a democratically elected politician uses government spending for his own glory...

How big the outcry would be if Robert Habeck had had a statue erected of himself.
2
image de profil
@Staatsmann The BILD would write almost nothing else for a week 😂
2
image de profil
@GuenDolf WELT would organize a crisis summit for this and invite Elon Musk, Alice Weidel and probably Jens Spahn.

@Staatsmann "His" (?) museum?
image de profil
@Staatsmann

Thanks, I can google it myself.

My question was more directed at "HIS" museum. You explicitly wrote "HIS" museum. Why is it "HIS" museum? Are portraits of Markus Söder exhibited there?

Of course, you don't mention that there was a committee of inquiry into the matter. That's a shame too.
image de profil
@DusselDuck
I deliberately put the quotation marks in the comment.

It's not my job at this point to provide information about any committees of inquiry. I assume that people are capable of using Google themselves.

It is sarcastically referred to as "his" museum, as this museum is also very much a façade and has little real content.
Especially when you consider its political stance in the background, which is rather backward-looking and conservative.
A museum of the future for modern technologies is a very big self-irony.

If you then look at what is shown in the museum and compare this with his statements, it only gets funnier.
Add to that the mocking title "Foodblogger Markus Söder", who is the Prime Minister of Bavaria as a "side job".
image de profil
@Staatsmann Allow me two questions:
1. you now write of "It" being sarcastically referred to as "his" museum? Who is "it"? (To be honest, I can't think of anyone other than you who has called it that so far)

2. how did you come up with the mocking title "Foodblogger Markus Söder" in this context? Where does this title appear?

Considering how important the appearance of politicians is, I don't see this as a problem but as necessary expenditure, how do you react to this, fewer women in government?
12
@Wravo Apply make-up alone or nothing at all?
1
I think it's important that Anna-Lena Bärbock comes across as professionally as possible when visiting other heads of state and in our society, whether you like it or not, make-up is part of it and whether she has the time to do it herself on the plane is the next question
1
@Wravo Hm. It would be interesting to see what the tax office says if I claim hairdressing costs, clothes and shaving kit as company expenses in future, with reference to our politicians. I also hold regular training courses and travel to trade fairs. That's just like representing our politicians. My tax advisor has so far said that there is no chance of claiming this as income-related expenses.
In this respect, I find this lack of equality outrageous.

@financial_ninja_104
Politicians are paid by the state because they represent the state. You don't.

Professional public image is part of the job, not part of a personal beauty routine.
You coordinate sanctions, arms aid and international alliances.
You represent your company and hand out pens in Wuppertal.
If you want equality, you should first understand the roles.
3
@Yoshika sorry, you must be a civil servant or perhaps a politician yourself ;-)
It's not about winning the Miss or Mister Universe Cup, it's about doing politics and representing the people. I also have to represent my company. Why should politicians get paid for make-up and not others?
I find the privileges of our politicians more than inappropriate. Especially as some of the ladies and gentlemen there obviously know no boundaries. As I said, if other companies could also claim this as an expense, I would find it ok. But this way it's just outrageous. And, in my opinion, unnecessary expenditure.
We would probably even have to pay tax on it as a monetary benefit if we claimed it at the expense of the state or the company.
@financial_ninja_104 I don't think I need to go on here when people compare themselves to top politicians. Hypothetical example: if I think about what happens if a Bäerbock has a make-up mishap while flying to Washington to visit Trump, he feels disrespected and therefore pushes us 20% more. I think there is not much better invested money in the German state, I am happy to pay the few cents a year and would be happy if these costs continue to rise, which would mean we have more female ministers. If you see it differently, you are welcome to use your vote so that the state also pays for your make-up
image de profil
You can't make it up... women in politics are so often criticized for their appearance - and if they do something for it (or against it, depending on your point of view), then it's not right again... 😵‍💫🤣

Pah that's what Söder does in the quarter. Beginners. That's why you vote csu! At least they know how to make money! (Attention satire)

My dear ..pity, political framing. Classic campaigning post. Women, Greens, make-up, tax money. The picture you paint: Women in government = expensive, superfluous, vain. Kind of sexist undertones. And you're using the age-old right-wing populist topos "while you can't afford electricity, they're getting make-up".

What exactly is the insight, apart from the fact that make-up artists don't work for free,
but are paid well, as in every studio, panel and TV appearance worldwide?

Top politicians are in the spotlight worldwide. Make-up artists, photographers and stylists are part of the job description at this level. You don't have to like it. But by scandalizing it in this way, you end up criticizing not the expenses, but the role model.

image de profil
@Yoshika
The fact that the Federal Foreign Office, for example, spends more today than it used to ... given. In geopolitically tense times with a growing international presence, this can be explained. It can be examined objectively. But the presentation is not a factual contribution, but political framing.
image de profil
@Yoshika Prices (for photographers, stylists, make-up) are also likely to have doubled in the same period.

There are a few from various sources. But Lindner is missing... " However, Christian Lindner (44) is the thrifty politician. Perhaps precisely because our finance minister is good with figures, he spends surprisingly little money on make-up - just 650 euros, according to the newspaper."

The damage caused by inappropriate words and wrong decisions is much greater. In return, we had a good-looking foreign minister for a few years.

what's the point nix? they still look equally shitty :D

No other problems than make-up costs? Ask what our current female ministers spend. It's certainly no less ... and how long do you want to get upset about that?

@Nobody_123 These sums are not about Monday mornings in front of the Bundestag but usually about traveling, when Bärbock is made up on the plane while she is briefed by her team to meet the head of state of no idea
@Wravo That's the main point, exactly. Just like recordings before summit meetings elsewhere, Council of Europe meetings, receptions of foreign politicians where cameras are present: on all these occasions, the person in question has to pay for their styling and appearance themselves, or, in the case of work-related expenses: the state. Only in the case of planned television interviews does the television station take care of the make-up, but not the rest of the styling.

And the fact that this is a little more expensive for women than for men: that's just the way our society is.

It's a lot of money, and in the past you were just ugly and went to some state council meeting: but in the end only one photo was taken in black and white. Nobody was interested in that. Nowadays, everything is broadcast live in 4K and ends up on a 165-inch OLED display for the customer.

Incidentally, this was never any different in past centuries and in all societies. The expenses that the Royal Family has, or the "Sun King" had: they must have exceeded that by far.
1
And how shitty it looks when you spend too little money on styling, as you can see from the "Orange man" in the WhiteHouse....
Suits that fit like shit, too big, badly cut, tie not tied correctly, face made up subterraneanly badly: how is the man supposed to make good politics? You almost have to understand ......
