NetApp – The Quiet Beneficiary of AI’s Data Hunger with a “Low Cheat” Setup

NetApp (NTAP) is drawing investors’ attention thanks to the AI wave. Founded in Silicon Valley in 1992, the company is one of the pioneers of data storage.

Its business model is based on intelligent data infrastructure for enterprises. Its primary source of revenue is all-flash storage systems—that is, exceptionally fast storage based on flash chips. In addition, the company offers public cloud services that are deeply integrated into the platforms of Amazon, Microsoft, and Google. Finally, there is a subscription model for storage-as-a-service called “Keystone.”

Currently, the market is focusing on the following trend: Following billions in investments in graphics processing units, data infrastructure is taking center stage as the next phase of the AI boom. After all, AI models are only as good as the data they access. Companies must first organize their scattered data sets and make them readily available before AI can operate productively. In addition, for data protection reasons, many companies are turning to hybrid solutions combining their own data centers with the cloud—which is precisely NetApp’s core business.

The company’s main competitors are Dell Technologies and Everpure (formerly Pur Storage).

The most recent quarterly results, released on May 28, 2026, exceeded expectations: Revenue rose 12% year-over-year to $1.95 billion. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $2.43, exceeding analysts’ estimates. For fiscal year 2027, management is projecting revenue of $7.33 to $7.58 billion. This corresponds to growth of approximately 8%. In addition, the share buyback program was increased by $1 billion. These figures sent the markets soaring.

Juan’s Take on NetApp’s Financial Metrics for 2025–2029

(short, clear, precise—just as Juan would write it for you in the deck)

NetApp presents an astonishingly clean, almost “textbook” profile of a mature yet highly profitable tech player. Revenue is growing moderately, but EBIT and net income are growing faster than revenue every year —a sign of genuine operational leverage. The FCF remains impressively stable, with margins well above 20%.

The net debt falls deep into negative territory, making NetApp a cash machine. ROE is absurdly highbecause the company uses capital extremely efficiently.

For Juan, this is a “quality compounder”, not a hyper-grower—but one that delivers reliably year after year, maintains margins, generates cash, and minimizes risks.

In short:

“NetApp isn’t a sprint—it’s a precise, profitable endurance run. Stable, high-margin, cash-rich. A company you’re happy to have on your team.”

Juan’s Quick Take (concise, clear, perfect for your deck)

NetApp’s valuation profile is getting cleaner and more attractive every year. The dividend is rising steadily, while the yield is falling slightly—a sign that the stock price is rising faster than the dividend.

The P/E ratio is falling significantly toward 2028as earnings surge. Particularly noteworthy: EPS is growing by over 35% in 2028, which alleviates valuation pressure.

The PEG falls over the years, which shows:

“The market is paying more—but is also getting more growth.”

For Juan, this is a classic value stockthat will reach a true valuation sweet spot in 2028: high earnings growth + falling P/E ratio = attractive valuation window.

Interesting report. Thanks, as always.

I find the investment case fundamentally sound. While many investors focus on chip manufacturers, it’s often forgotten that AI cannot be used productively without a high-performance data infrastructure. That’s exactly where NetApp is well-positioned with hybrid cloud, data management, and enterprise storage.

Still, it’s important to keep expectations in perspective. To me, NetApp is more of a beneficiary of AI infrastructure than the next AI high-flyer. The company is growing steadily, has strong margins and recurring revenue, and is conducting share buybacks—but at the same time, competition from Pure Storage, Dell, HPE, and the major cloud providers shouldn’t be underestimated.

For me, NetApp is therefore more of a long-term quality stock than a tenbagger bet. I can see myself buying into the stock or building a small position, but I would use pullbacks as an opportunity to buy more and wouldn’t have unrealistic expectations regarding growth.

Thanks for the introduction, my dear 🫶 I’m already familiar with the company 😬, but I still don’t want to keep Jack’s analysis from you

The Irreplaceable Data Pipeline
NetApp has evolved from a traditional hardware storage provider into an indispensable hybrid cloud and data management specialist. Through its proprietary ONTAP operating system, the company is deeply embedded in the infrastructures of all major hyperscalers (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud). Anyone who needs to keep complex enterprise data ready for AI applications and cloud workloads can hardly do without NetApp’s architecture.

🛠️ DNA Check
K-Score 5/5: Perfect quality check according to all 5S criteria.
High return on equity: An ROIC of 24.8% underscores the extremely efficient allocation of capital.
Cash Flow Machine: An FCF margin of 22.4% and a negative working capital cycle (-18 days) ensure a steady inflow of cash.
Rock-Solid Balance Sheet: With a net debt/EBITDA ratio of 0.3x and over $3 billion in cash, the company’s financial stability is absolutely crisis-proof.
Strong margins: A gross margin of 70.6% and an operating margin of 22.8% demonstrate strong pricing power.

🚀 Growth Leverage & Catalysts
AI & All-Flash Supercycle: The massive expansion of AI infrastructure is forcing companies to upgrade to high-performance all-flash storage systems.
Deep Hyperscaler Integration: Native cloud offerings (e.g., AWS FSx for NetApp ONTAP) generate high-margin, recurring software revenue.
Shareholder-Friendly Use of Capital: Continuous share buybacks (reducing the number of shares by approximately 2–3% per year).

⚠️ Valuation & Risks
Slight overvaluation: At a current price of ~€152 ($165 USD), the stock is slightly above its fair DCF base value ($149 USD / ~€137). The P/E ratio of ~22x leaves little room for disappointment.
Competitive pressure: Aggressive cloud-native competitors like Pure Storage are entering the market and require constant innovation.

Jack’s Verdict:
“NetApp is a flawless quality powerhouse (K-Score 5/5) with a perfect balance sheet and a strong cash flow profile. The company benefits directly from the AI infrastructure boom without bearing the risk associated with pure-play hardware manufacturers. The business is excellent, but the stock price has gotten slightly overheated. A dream pick for the watchlist, waiting for a pullback.”

Thanks for the introduction, my friend! I’m familiar with it, and I don’t think it’s fundamentally wrong, but in my view, Juan’s analysis does have some weaknesses. Starting in 2026, based on the projected growth, the PEG ratio will consistently be above 1, and in some cases even above 2. Unfortunately, nothing is actually declining sustainably there🤷🏼‍♂️. And the stock isn’t exactly a bargain either. It seems that more than the future growth has already been priced in.

@Get_Rich_or_Die_Tryin Hi there. As you can see from the key metrics, I’ve included figures from both Market Screener and OnVista. Juan’s conclusion is based on the OnVista figures. Your assessment is based on the Market Screener figures. I’m sure you have the most up-to-date figures here, though. We already discussed the issue with the discrepancies in the multiples during the last presentation.

Great value, and I'll say this with a bit of pride: I got in before you even mentioned it. Even a blind chicken can find a grain of corn sometimes without the community's help.😂😎

Did you actually get in on that? I'd built up a small initial position in the meantime, and so far it's up just under 8%. I'm thinking about whether to add to it.

@Multibagger I thought it was exciting, but I'm not part of it
