From consumer debt to millionaire. My way forward.

"You can't change the wind, but you can change the sails."

This is my first contribution to the community. I would like to use this opportunity to introduce my career.

The most important thing about me is that I am 32 years old and male. I have a vocational baccalaureate and am building my professional career on a specialist training course in healthcare plus additional studies in business administration. In the second half of my twenties, I had a consumer debt of €30,000 on a net income of around €2,200-2,400 (depending on allowances). I also had health problems.

One winter evening in 2019, driven by shame and remorse about my personal financial situation, I decided to end my life, but fortunately I didn't succeed.

But I did manage to change my mind that night. That the problem wasn't me, but what I should be.

So I ended my long-term partnership, moved out of the apartment we shared and quit my job.

Emergency reset button.

I applied to countless companies for a job in sales. When I finally had the choice between three offers, I didn't choose the best one in terms of money, but the one that felt best for me.

I have since been promoted twice in this company and am still deeply grateful and happy.

I paid off my debts with my first commissions and at the same time built up a monthly deposit via savings plans.

I cracked the €100,000 mark this year, and what was still a life goal for me a few years ago is suddenly just the first stage towards the real goal: the million. But not because I think everything will be better then. No. Because I know that I already lack nothing materially compared to many people out there and, as a competitive athlete, I love to see the journey as the goal.

Without a goal in mind, I might drift off again. The goal of being a millionaire one day keeps me on track between humility and courage.

I am not a stock market god or an investor king. I'm just a person with a story, like everyone here.

I'm learning every day and 2025 was the first year in which I was able to generate a small, solid return. So the lion's share of my portfolio came from cash deposits.

I am grateful every day that something has kept me alive. And if it can inspire anyone here to keep their head above water in difficult times, then this first post has already more than fulfilled its purpose.

On to new lands.

Your Marco Polo

Great story, thank you for your openness! I wish you continued success. And sales is the best job in the world for those who are born for it. I've been doing it for 30 years now and that won't change in the few years until I retire.😉👍

@Multibagger Chris, that's how I see it too. And "sales people" like us often don't fit into other jobs either. I had to learn and find that out. I wish you continued success in the stock market, in your job and in life. 😎✌🏼

@Multibagger BTW did you get in on IREN today? Or do you think there will be another dip to $40? What I find really interesting is that IREN has now completely decoupled from Bitcoin 📈📉 I waited for SAP, where the inliner made almost 40% today, I don't think I should put anything on the watchlist: I still have a long of Irish from three months ago on the WL at Onvista and it was almost a tenbagger in the meantime 🤪 but what the heck, you can't be everywhere 😅

@Klein-Anleger1 no, I'll either wait for a setback or trade short again when the upper range limit at 50$ is reached.

Wow Marco, thanks for sharing your story. Incredibly strong, how you worked your way back into life from such a difficult phase and then step by step towards financial freedom. Reducing €30,000 in consumer debt, overcoming health problems, leaving everything behind and starting from scratch is something very few people achieve. I can only admire your courage to take responsibility and set sail anew. The fact that you have reached over €100,000 today is no coincidence, but the result of discipline, reflection and hard work. And with such an attitude, the goal of a million is not a question of "if", but only of "when". Thank you for your openness, contributions like this help people who are struggling themselves. Respect and continued support on your journey. 💪

@Suky Hello Suky, then my contribution was received exactly as it was intended. Thank you for your encouragement. We're all in the same boat somewhere, we've just had to use different ports of call. 🙏🏽

First of all, thank you for having the courage to post your story. And... You're not the only one who had to make a new start. I was never so low that I wanted to end my life. But I lived in a shared flat with a friend who I got on well with for a long time. Unfortunately, he was an alcoholic and one day, during a verbal argument, he threw me down the stairs and threatened to kill me. I had to leave the house from one second to the next with a head injury and concussion and leave everything behind me. I never got back the money I lent him for the house. I had to leave all my clothes, valuable textbooks and many personal things behind. And not only that. I also had to leave all my bookkeeping from the last few years. Fortunately, there was never a tax audit in the 10 years that followed. So it doesn't matter now. But it was also a radical new start that would have been difficult without my family and friends who supported me. And... Yes, my long-term goal is also a million. But first the 500k as an interim goal.
And my second goal is to be able to live on the dividends. So rent, electricity, water, insurance, car...
I can already pay the rent from the dividends. It's just not enough to live on yet. But even if I can live off them, I'll still keep working because I enjoy my work. I just don't have to put up with everything at work. And that's worth a lot.

It's nice to read something like that. You've already achieved the most important thing: the right attitude. Stick with it 👍 🍀

If you were a share, you would have achieved the perfect turnaround. Congratulations!
(I had to google what consumer debt is)

@jkb92 If you don't know what consumer debt is, then you're 1:0 ahead on the road to a stable financial existence. :D

@Aktienfox Thank you 🦊🙏🏽
Hello
Respect. Thank you for the ruthlessly honest report, not everyone can be so clear...
You can really hear it resonate, nothing will knock you out so quickly...

I absolutely believe you about the million... because you have understood that the path, no matter what it may be, is much more interesting....

Regards

What a guy!!! Even if you don't make the million, I'm already bowing down to you. And btw....you'll make the million with that attitude.

Welcome and go your own way!

But say: if the path is the goal, why the Mio as the goal? I don't understand. 🤔

@Epi you can also badmouth everything

@Epi I see it like an Ironman. In triathlon you have your intermediate goals, and actually the way (the training) to achieve the goals (intermediate times, heart rate etc.) is the really nice thing about it. But there is still this big end goal. And because I know myself, I know that I will postpone my final goal until the last kilometer. Then the end goal is not to finish this triathlon, but to be a bit faster in another one. That's why the million is the declared end goal for today, but the way there is the real goal that I enjoy and that makes me proud.

Reaching the big goal can also leave you empty. I prefer to fill it up beforehand.

And I don't always take such a strict view of metaphors. 😎✌🏼

@SakuraInvest Great!
Have you ever thought about formulating some kind of target? E.g. an annual target return or something?

My own target is not a number in the future that will lose its meaning when I reach it anyway, but a number now: 1.5-2%pM. If I stick to it, I know when I will reach which capital markers and how I can adjust my quality of life accordingly. Psychologically very interesting.

@Epi Thanks for the impressions, I'll have a quiet minute to think about it. That's a sensible approach to get rid of absolute € sums altogether. 👍🏼

Sometimes a reset is good. Wish I could do the same. 😑

@Panda0404 If not now, perhaps later. A reset can also be smaller and then grow. I hope you find the strength and courage to do it like I did. 😊🙏🏽

@SakuraInvest. Yes, I hope so. Standing in a huge pile of rubble in all respects. Before a horror own company stumbles hard. Sometimes there seems to be no way out. Just work as others imagine. I think you know such a situation. Thank you 😀

@Panda0404 Keep your head up. When one door closes, another often opens. ...
And as they say in English... after rain comes sun... so look positively into the future. I also had to make a pretty big new start.
Maybe I'll write more about this later in Marco Polo's article.

@financial_ninja_104 thank you I'll keep fighting. Giving up is not an option. :-) It's a comfort that others also stumble but then everything turns out well.

One of the strongest posts I've read here in a long time @SakuraInvest!!!

Your humility and focus on the real values in life would do some of the people I read here a lot of good.

Stay tuned & keep it up. 👏🏻

Thank you very much for your story. Keep up the good work 👍🏻 May I ask what area you work in as a salesperson to have reached such a milestone so quickly?
1
Imagen de perfil
@income_magician_169 Sure, I work in the field of biochemistry. In my case, the fixed salary + commission is above average, but not remarkably high compared to my "brother industry", pharmaceuticals. I would say that the biggest leverage is my budgeting of living costs and a few years of not consuming. I've since given it up, but it has healed me to the extent that I no longer want many things, even though they would now be easy to buy. 3-4 years of doing without and a lucky hand in acquisition helped me to get to the sum very quickly.
Imagen de perfil
Just love for the story 🙂 Money isn't everything in life - but enough money still gives you a good feeling and offers security. It can also fill you with pride if discipline, hard work and consistency eventually pay off in the form of good returns. It is not the amount of wealth that is important here, but what has been achieved. A major milestone so far and, considering the difficult start, a fantastic achievement and a well-deserved result. 👏
