BYD is fully committed to autonomous driving and is thus challenging Tesla for the electric car crown.
The Chinese car manufacturer announced on Monday that it will be expanding its "God's Eye" intelligent driving system to eleven new models.
According to BYD manager Zhang Zhuo, the 9300 euro Seagull model will also be equipped with the latest level of intelligent driving functions.
BYD is competing with Tesla for the title of the world's largest electric car manufacturer. Now the Chinese up-and-comer also wants to topple Elon Musk from the throne of self-driving cars.
On Monday, the electric giant presented a lavish expansion of its intelligent driving system. The new range of high-tech vehicles will enable it to hold its own against the relentless competition in the world's most competitive car market.
BYD wants to secure a highly competitive market
Before the event began, BYD executive Zhang Zhuo said the company would launch eleven new models featuring BYD's "God's Eye" self-driving technology for its Ocean brand. The ultra-cheap BYD Seagull model, currently starts at 69,800 yuan (around 9300 euros) in China and will also get the "high quality" and intelligent driving function. Zhuo wrote this in a post on the Chinese social media website Weibo.
The general manager of BYD, Lu Tian, said that they are fully upgrading the company's six main brands - named after Chinese imperial dynasties - with the new technology one by one.
The reason for BYD's move into autonomous driving is that Chinese car manufacturers are increasingly focusing on smart electric vehicles and equipping their cars with ever more advanced technologies. In this way, they want to secure a share of the highly competitive Chinese market for electric vehicles.
The SU7 from smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi currently costs 30,000 US dollars (equivalent to around 29,000 euros) and features an intelligent driving assistant and voice control. With this market launch, Xiaomi has exceeded its sales figures from last year.
