🧬 ALK-Abelló: The Danish Lord of the Pills

🧬 ALK-Abelló: The Danish world market leader in the allergy revolution

I'll tell you how it is: I was sitting in the garden in Denmark the other day, the first hazelnut pollen flying low like fighter jets, and while I was destroying my fourth pack of tissues in ten minutes, I had an epiphany.

I looked like a rabbit on speed - red eyes, runny nose, completely exhausted.

Then I thought to myself: "If I'm going to suffer because of these tiny nature terrorists, then I damn well at least want my depot to profit from it!" Who is making money from my misery?

Who is turning my tears into Danish kroner? The answer: $ALK B (-0,59 %)
ALK-Abelló.

attachment

1. the company: More than just "pollen protection"

$ALK B (-0,59 %) is not a traditional pharmaceutical company that only suppresses symptoms. ALK is the pioneer of allergy immunotherapy (AIT).

The aim is to train the immune system so that the allergy disappears permanently (hyposensitization).

The highlight: ALK has radically changed the market from laborious injection cures to SLIT tablets (sublingual) tablets. The patient takes these conveniently at home. This ensures extremely high patient loyalty over the treatment period of usually three years - a "subscription model" for health.

2. the hard facts & key figures (as at: 17.03.2026)

attachment

3. the check according to your investment formulas

I. Core quality formula (growth & margin)

  • Sales growth: 15,2 % + EBIT margin: 26,2 % = Score: 41.4
  • Verdict:
Outstanding (> 25). ALK is a quality machine. The scaling of tablet production is driving margins massively upwards.

II. cash flow quality formula

  • Free cash flow (FCF): DKK 1,432 million
  • FCF yield:
    ~3,1 %
  • Verdict: Does not currently meet my 5% hurdle. Reason: ALK is investing heavily in the US launch of neffy® and new capacities. The substance is there, but is being "fed" in order to achieve the 2028 target (8.5 bn sales).

III Dividend & exclusion filter

attachment
  • The yield (0.75%) is too low for pure "hunters". But: The dividend is 100% covered by cash flow (payout ratio approx. 30%). No debt for the distribution - very clean.

4. the pipeline: Where will the future money come from?

The "Holy Grail" is neffy®. The first needle-free adrenaline nasal spray for allergic shocks. It replaces the Epi-Pen.

  • Status: Already being rolled out in the USA and Europe. Initial data show: 9 out of 10 patients prefer the spray to the syringe.
  • New: Tablets for peanut allergies in children are in the final phase. This is a billion-dollar market with no real competition.

5. strategy & CEO voice

CEO Peter Halling (in office since the end of 2023) has sharpened the "Allergy+" strategy.

  • Quote:
"2025 was a turning point. We have proven that we can achieve double-digit growth and leverage margins to 26% at the same time."
  • Outlook for 2026: ALK expects sales growth of 11-15% and a margin of around 25% (despite high reinvestments).

6. opponents & market environment

  • Stallergenes Greer (Switzerland): The eternal rival, but technologically far behind ALK in tablets (especially in the US).
  • Dermapharm (Allergopharma): Strong in Germany, but no threat to ALK's supremacy globally.

7. opportunities & risks

  • Opportunities: Climate change (longer pollen season), development of the Chinese market (partnership with GenSci).
  • Risks: High valuation (P/E 38 does not forgive mistakes), regulatory hurdles for pediatric approvals in the US.

8. analyst opinion

  • Consensus: "Buy" (9 out of 12 analysts).
  • Price target: Average 245 DKK (approx. 15% upside). Analysts particularly praise the cash position of over DKK 800 million (net cash).

attachment

9. the "chart mystery": The supposed crash

If you look at the 5-year chart, many are shocked by a massive "crash" in March 2022.

  • The resolution: This was a stock split at a ratio of 1:20.
  • An investor who previously held one share for e.g. DKK 3,000 then held 20 shares at DKK 150 each. The value remained the same, but many chart tools present this as a 95% crash without adjustment. No reason to panic!

10. why the chart recently "crashed" (March 2026)

In recent weeks, the share has corrected from around DKK 237 to DKK 212. The reasons:

Ex-dividend: Today (17.03.) the dividend is deducted from the share price. This always looks like a small drop in the chart.

R&D change: Henriette Mersebach, head of research for many years, left the company in February. This is causing short-term uncertainty about the speed of the pipeline.

Profit-taking: After +50% within a year, many value investors have cashed out as the P/E ratio climbed to almost 40.

Canada delay: Approval for neffy® in Canada is taking a few months longer than expected (now expected for Q2 2026).

👃 The "red nose" ending: And now for you!

So, let's get down to brass tacks (or pollen by the grasses): Which of you also belongs to the exclusive "club of the red noses"? Who already swallows the "subscription model" from ALK or perhaps even has the new nasal spray in the cupboard because they hate needles like the devil hates holy water?

Do you know the company at all, or did you previously think ALK stood for "alcohol consumption" (which would also be a strategy for some share prices)? Let me know which of you are suffering here or who is saying: "Value is more important to me than my runny nose!"

This thing looks good. Here is just the conclusion (normally 15 points) of my Bullshit Detector Vers2: Investment Conclusion & Positioning

Recommendation: BUY

Margin of Safety: My calculated intrinsic value is DKK 258. The share would be a "no-brainer" at a discount of 20% on this, i.e. at around DKK 206. As the current price is DKK 208.80, we are almost at the ideal entry point.

Investment profile: Quality compounder. ALK is not a classic biotech gamble, but a highly profitable global market leader in a structural growth niche.

Forecast scenarios (EBIT margin / EPS in DKK)
Year Bear (EBIT / EPS) Base (EBIT / EPS) Bull (EBIT / EPS)
2026 23 % / 5,80 26 % / 6,50 28 % / 7,10
2027 22 % / 6,20 28 % / 8,20 31 % / 9,50
2028 21 % / 6,80 30 % / 10,40 34 % / 12,80
2029 21 % / 7,50 31 % / 12,50 35 % / 16,00

Never heard of it before, super interesting in any case in the overall constellation. Definitely on my watch list as a potential replacement candidate for my portfolio. Danke🙏🏻❤️

I'm happy to share the risk/reward comparison and the conclusion of my ruthlessly honest analyst here:

Analyst's verdict: Ruthlessly honest

The story: From "niche player" to "compounder"

ALK has proven that it can grow profitably. The strategy of switching from syringe-based therapies (SCIT) to tablets (SLIT) is paying off massively. With the new needle-free adrenaline spray neffy® (in cooperation with ARS Pharma), the company is also targeting a market worth billions.

The opportunities (The Bull Case)

- Pediatric turbo: Approvals for children (house dust mite) open up huge new patient populations in the USA and Europe.

- US revival: After years of stagnation, the US tablet business (Odactra) is finally gaining traction.

- Cash machine: The company is de facto debt-free (NIBD/EBITDA -0.4). This provides massive scope for acquisitions or higher dividends.

The risks (The Bear Case)

- Valuation premium: With a P/E ratio of approx. 38-40, ALK is "priced for perfection". Every slightest dip in growth will be mercilessly punished by the market.

- Margin plateau: Management is guiding for an EBIT margin of "only" around 25% in 2026. This means that the big leaps in efficiency are over for the time being; future profit growth must come purely from volume.

- Dependence on reimbursement systems: Should health authorities put pressure on the prices of AIT tablets, the gross margin will melt faster than the marketing team can say "allergy".

Conclusion

ALK-Abelló is a quality stock par excellence, but not a bargain. Anyone investing here is betting that allergies will increase worldwide (unfortunately a fact) and that ALK will remain the standard. The stock is too expensive for value investors, but for growth investors with staying power it remains one of the best stocks in the European mid-cap segment.

@Get_Rich_or_Die_Tryin And again we understand each other :) Quality has its price!
What surprised me again was that nobody had ever posted anything about this before
1
Imagen de perfil
@Raketentoni Scandinavian mid and small caps are actually less well known here, less in demand for dividends anyway. withholding tax etc.. But: there are an astonishing number of market leaders with top financial profiles, which I've realized recently after doing a lot of research myself.
Imagen de perfil
@Get_Rich_or_Die_Tryin Yes, and then there's another rocket donkey 😁 I'll be presenting another nice share this week
2
Imagen de perfil
@Raketentoni I'm definitely looking forward to it!😁🙏🏻 Thank you for your diverse ideas here.

Mega contribution. Must have been a lot of work. Thanks, I'll have a look at it at my leisure
2

@Tenbagger2024 Take a look and then please give us your opinion.
1
Imagen de perfil
Strong contribution 💪😊 definitely sounds interesting, I personally have decided not to invest in pharma in the future 😊
2
Imagen de perfil
@Simpson Well, I've finally moved $GMAB out of the German portfolio and with $ALK B I've only added a second stock today. But everyone as he wants it. Thanks for the praise.
3
Imagen de perfil
I'm very wary of Danish pharma chip shops like $NOVO B etc. 😉 But joking aside, I've never heard of them and I'm also an allergy sufferer
2
Imagen de perfil
@Multibagger "Haha, if Novo Nordisk is a 'pharma chip shop', then I'd like to have a whole chain of them in my portfolio!" 😉
But joking aside: the fact that you, as an allergy sufferer, haven't heard of ALK-Abelló is precisely the reason why the share is so exciting. For years, they were more of a 'hidden champion' in the background because doctors administered the immune injections directly in the practice.
However, they are now radically switching to tablets for home use (a kind of subscription model for allergy sufferers) and are launching 'neffy', an adrenaline nasal spray that could replace the classic epi-pen. Take a look at their margins and growth - for a 'chip shop', this is real Danish dynamite! 🇩🇰🚀"
2
Imagen de perfil
@Raketentoni But the Danish Dynamites have only won the title once!
But what advantage do the tablets from $ALK B have over those available here in Germany from all kinds of manufacturers?
1
Imagen de perfil
@Multibagger

Chris, I think we need to make a quick distinction here between 'fire department' and 'fire protection'! 😉
You are probably confusing the classic allergy medications such as Telfast, Cetirizine or Loratadine with what ALK-Abelló does.
* The 'chip shop solution' (symptom relief): Telfast & Co. are antihistamines. You take them when your nose is already running. It's like an umbrella: It keeps you dry as long as it's raining, but it doesn't stop the rain. As soon as the effect wears off, you're wet again.
* The ALK solution (combating causes): What ALK does with its pills is called allergy immunotherapy (AIT). This is not a painkiller, but an 'update' for your immune system. You train your body over three years that pollen is not an enemy. The aim is to heal, not to suppress the symptoms.
Why are the ALK tablets better than the rest in Germany?
In Germany, you often still get classic hyposensitization with injections (SCIT) or drops.
* Injections: You have to go to the doctor every few weeks, sit around, be monitored because of the risk of shock - totally annoying.
* Drops: The dosage is often not stable enough.
* ALK tablets (SLIT): They are so highly standardized that they are the only ones to have passed the extremely tough approval hurdles in the USA (FDA). Pharmaceutically, this is a completely different level than the '08/15 drops' from the local pharmacy.
And while the others are still tinkering with their drops, ALK is launching neffy, the first adrenaline nasal spray for emergencies. If you have this in your cupboard, you no longer need an epi-pen. This isn't small stuff, this is disruption of a billion-dollar market.
Maybe you should take a closer look at the 'Danish Dynamites' before the train leaves without you! 🚂💨

Imagen de perfil
@Raketentoni I think it's called immunization, isn't it? It has been around for a long time and, as far as I know from experience, does not necessarily guarantee success after 3 years.
1
Imagen de perfil
@Multibagger "Chris, you old fox, you've hit the nail on the head! 😉 But let's sort out the facts before we open the 'Danish chip shop' again:
Vocabulary check: what ALK does is technically not an 'immunization' (like a classic vaccination against measles), but an allergy immunotherapy (AIT). The small but subtle difference: a vaccination is designed to prevent you from getting something in the first place. ALK's AIT is a 'software update' for an immune system that is already programmed completely wrong.
The thing with the guarantee of success: there's never 100% in medicine, that's clear. But ALK is the only company in the world that has an official seal of approval for the 'disease-modifying effect' for its tablets (like Grazax). This is the 'Holy Grail' of pharmaceuticals: it is clinically proven that the effect lasts for years after the end of the 3-year course. In studies, patients still had 30-50% fewer symptoms even after the follow-up and needed far fewer chemical pills.
Why it 'doesn't work' for some: Hand on heart - most 'failures' are due to discipline. With the old injection cures, many stopped after 1.5 years because they didn't want to keep running to the doctor. This is precisely the business case for ALK: you can take the tablets in the comfort of your own home while brushing your teeth. The drop-out rates are much lower, and if you stick with it for 3 years, the effect is statistically extremely stable.
'It's been around for a while': That's right! But ALK has elevated the whole thing from the 'alchemy corner' (individual mixtures in the pharmacy) to industrial high standardization. It's the leap from a flip phone to a smartphone.
And even if there is no 100% guarantee for each individual: The market of millions of allergy sufferers who are fed up with suffering and are willing to pay for this 'subscription' for 3 years is gigantic.
3
Imagen de perfil
@Raketentoni Is this covered by the health insurance companies here? And are there competitors who also offer tablet therapy?
3
Imagen de perfil
@Multibagger 1. does the health insurance pay for it? 🏥
Yes, absolutely! In Germany, ALK tablets (Grazax, Itulazax, Acarizax) are regularly covered by statutory (GKV) and private health insurance companies (PKV).
As these are prescription-only medicines, as a statutory health insurance patient you only pay the usual co-payment (usually 5 to 10 euros).
The catch (for the health insurance company): A 3-year course of treatment costs the insurance company several thousand euros in total. But - and this is the argument in favor of the share - it is still cheaper for the insurance company than financing a lifetime of asthma sprays, emergency treatments and absences from work. It's an investment in the cure.
2. are there competitors with tablets? ⚔️
Yes, ALK is not completely alone in the world, but they are the top dog in the tablet segment. Here are the names you should know:
Stallergenes Greer (Switzerland/France): This is the biggest runner-up. They have the Oralair (5-grass tablet) and, more recently, a tablet against house dust mites (Actair/Orylmyte).
Allergopharma (Dermapharm, Germany): They are based right on our doorstep in Reinbek. They are extremely strong in Germany, but historically tend to come from the syringe corner (SCIT). They are lagging behind ALK when it comes to state-of-the-art, globally approved tablets.
HAL Allergy / Bencard: These companies are also on the market, but often still rely on drops or individual mixtures.
3. why ALK is still ahead (The moat) 🏰
When Chris asks: 'Why not just buy the competition?
The range: ALK is the only one to have the 'cloverleaf' of grasses, house dust mites, birch/trees and ragweed fully approved as a ready-to-use tablet - including in the USA.
FDA approval: The US market is a goldmine. Getting approval there is like landing on the moon. ALK has it, many competitors do not (yet) or only for niches.
Simplicity: While other companies often still have complex dosing regimens (first drops, then syringe, then this), ALK's motto is: One tablet, once a day. This is the Apple principle of allergy therapy: it simply works.
2
Imagen de perfil
@Raketentoni OK, I'll take a look at it. If Mr. Prompt doesn't like everything, maybe it's an investment for me!
2
Imagen de perfil
@Raketentoni In Germany, health insurance covers it and the pill responds to several grasses, pollens and house dust?
If that's really the case, I'll buy shares tomorrow and get a prescription for the treatment.
2
Imagen de perfil
@TradingHase Why don't you ask your insurance company or allergist? I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Here in Denmark you only have to pay a minimal amount extra

Great find and introduction 💸
I'm not part of the club, but had to get my nose fixed recently for a very long time, so I don't want to know about pharma clits :D

But apart from that, the company looks really strong, I like the financials and the growth shown, including guidance.
However, as already mentioned, the valuation is really sporty and doesn't allow the company to deliver less.

The management is still quite fresh, but has presented itself well and could do well. A little more MOAT would be good at the price, as it's not a big player the risk is correspondingly higher and for me the divi unfortunately still has some room for improvement.

If they deliver what they promise but probably a top company, I blame it on my WL then it's probably already 2 pharma companies although I didn't really want to invest there either 🤣
2
Imagen de perfil
@Stocktective Thanks for your opinion, well ALK is not a classic pharmaceutical company. I'm also out of Novo, I only have $GMAB left in my portfolio.
2
Imagen de perfil
Interesting. I've been on levocetirizine for years and have no desire for many years of conventional therapy with mostly little benefit.
Is ALK therapy more effective?
I think the nasal spray is great. Another company has a product that should be placed under the patient's tongue.
I wonder if they have ever tried to put something like this in the mouth of an allergy sufferer in shock. 🙈
2

@TradingHase I'm not a doctor, but you could ask yours. 🤷

Exciting company that I didn't know about before. Thanks for the introduction and research. 👍
Somehow I just need more capital to be able to put all the good suggestions from the community into the portfolio. 😅
2
Imagen de perfil
@NichtRelevant Thank you very much. Yes, capital is one of those things. But then it's better to buy 5 than none at all, and then always restock from time to time. I made a lot of swing trades at the beginning of my career, selling everything when it was up 20%, investing the capital in other things etc. Good luck.

@Multibagger moin, yes it was in the post 😬

9. the "chart mystery": The supposed crash

If you look at the 5-year chart, many people are shocked by a massive "crash" in March 2022.

The solution: this was a 1:20 stock split.

An investor who previously had one share for e.g. DKK 3,000 then owned 20 shares at DKK 150 each. The value remained the same, but many chart tools present this as a 95% crash without adjustment. No need to panic!

@Abyss So that you know where I have my safety net:

"When to buy?" here are the zones

Zone 1 (Aggressive): 27,80 € to 28,10 € (208 - 210 DKK)

If you want to get in now, use the current support. This is the short-term trend.

Zone 2 (Realistic): 26.70 € to 27.40 € (200 - 205 DKK)

This is the "feel-good zone". A fair price for a quality share that is just taking a breather.

Zone 3 (hallelujah snapper): €24.70 to €25.70 (DKK 185 - 192)

This is the 200-day line. When we see these prices, it's a gift. The motto here is: collect!

Stop loss: If you are afraid, set it below €24.10 (DKK 180).
