Netflix considers bid for Formula 1 broadcasting rights in the USA

According to media reports, the streaming provider Netflix is considering bidding for the US broadcasting rights for Formula 1.

The rights are still held by sports broadcaster ESPN until the end of this year.

Netflix could take its place in future, according to the Times and The Athletic. However, the racing series is much less popular in the USA than in Europe or South America. Insiders told the news agency Reuters that the deadline for ESPN to extend its contract had recently expired. Now all bidders could throw their hats into the ring.

With the Formula 1 rights, Netflix could build on the success of its documentary series "Drive to survive", which provides a look behind the scenes of the races and has increased their popularity worldwide.

ESPN, Netflix, Formula 1 owner Liberty Media and Formula 1 could not be reached for comment.
