My mistake with the stop/limit order on Atlassian 😅

On August 27 I made a mistake on Trade Republic.

I actually just wanted to $TEAM (-1,88 %) actually just sell 1 share and keep the rest.

After that, I set a sell limit of 140 € —I thought that would protect me against a price drop.

My mistake:

A normal limit sell order means:

Sell for at least €140.

Since the price was already significantly higher, my remaining 2 shares were automatically sold.

In the end, I did sell at a profit, but I was still sad at first because I $TEAM (-1,88 %) actually wanted to hold onto Atlassian longer.

But maybe it’s also a good sign:

I made a mistake, didn’t lose any money, and learned something important.

From now on, I know:

A limit order ≠ a stop-loss.

What do you think?

Have you ever made an order mistake like that yourself?

I think that’s something that’s happened to everyone, especially when they’re just starting out. It’s just like in real life—we’re all just human and we all make mistakes. If you really want to protect yourself on the downside, try using a dynamic percentage trailing stop-loss. You set it once—for example, 20% below your purchase price—and it automatically moves higher as the price rises.

@Raketentoni That's a good idea with the trailing stop-loss 👍 Unfortunately, as far as I know, Trade Republic doesn't currently offer that. Otherwise, it would be really interesting for certain positions.

@RobHood10 There are reasons why NeoBroker is sometimes so cheap 🤷 Otherwise, just check every evening and, whenever there's a new daily closing high, manually adjust the stop-loss.

@Raketentoni It would be a dream come true if SLs were possible. I need approval before every trade 🙈

Things like that happen. It's happened to me before, too, but I just pushed it out of my mind. 😉

It happens to the best of us 😄 The important thing is: You didn’t lose anything and learned something right away.

Of course, it’s still a shame, especially with $TEAM. Personally, I believe Atlassian still has a lot of upside potential and that the journey isn’t over yet in the long run. You might end up regretting it later if you got out too early.

That happened to me last week, too 🙈😂. But looking back, it wasn't so bad after all
