Nvidia is apparently working on a robotaxi project

The US chip manufacturer Nvidia is reportedly working on a robotaxi project and plans to unveil it shortly. Nvidia, currently the most valuable company in the world, is already playing a major role in the field of autonomous driving as a technology partner and investor.

For a long time, Nvidia was only perceived as a manufacturer of graphics cards and computer chips, but the company now also plays a central role in AI hardware, which is also required for autonomous driving, among other things. For this segment, Nvidia has developed a comprehensive end-to-end platform of hardware, software and simulation tools that car manufacturers and suppliers use for the development, training and deployment of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicle systems.

As a result, Nvidia has become a next-generation supplier to the automotive industry and counts manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz, Volvo Cars, Jaguar Land Rover, BYD, Rivian, Lucid and Xiaomi among its customers. In the summer, Nvidia also invested in Nuro, a developer of robotaxi technology. The fact that Nvidia has had this topic on its roadmap for a long time is also demonstrated by a partnership with Continental that has been in place since 2018. The supplier Bosch also recently announced a partnership with Nvidia for the ADAS sector.

Now, reports are making the rounds on the internet that Nvidia is working on a self-driving robotaxi based on its DRIVE AGX Thor system and is pursuing a new, single-stage technology approach. According to this, Nvidia's technology approach for self-driving robotaxis will only use a continuous neural network.

The decision to launch its own robotaxi project was reportedly announced at a recent Nvidia all-hands meeting. It is said to be led by Ruchi Bhargava, a long-time senior director at the company.

An insider told the news portal 36Kr that Nvidia's entry into the robotaxi market was not only to expand its business, but also to introduce a "technical model for a robotaxi". So the question is: does Nvidia really want to become a robotaxi provider itself? Or is it more of a showcase or a reference design to enter into cooperation with a classic car manufacturer, as the Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn does with electric car designs, for example?

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has publicly emphasized several times that autonomous vehicles are not only "the first major commercial application of robotics", but also a "trillion-dollar industry". "It is expected that 3 billion US dollars will be invested and the project will be introduced in US cities in the future," an insider told 36Kr.

A lot is still unclear - but it is clear that Nvidia, as the most valuable company in the world, would have the capital and expertise to get involved in the robotaxi sector, especially as it has been developing and offering technology in this area for years. The market is currently still very small and in the USA is mainly occupied by Google's sister company Waymo, which is currently active in Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin and Atlanta. In China, there are four relevant players: Pony.ai, the Baidu subsidiary Apollo Go, WeRide and Momenta.

Thank you @Tenbagger2024, very interesting. In the meantime, you get the feeling that there is only one Magnific7 Inc. left and that nobody dares to enter the market with new innovations. Everyone is so thematically networked that it feels like a cluster risk despite the different companies. What do you think?
