Bayer – A New Start

$BAYN (-1,01 %) - What can I say? I’m just an incorrigible stubborn fool, which is why I’ve increased my disastrous Bayer position—one that has left me down as much as 70% at times over the past few years.

Is this a good investment? Is it morally justifiable? Honestly, I don’t know—I’ll probably end up in pesticide hell for it.

@asset_sage_smmad I also have a position in $BATS in my portfolio. So I'm a bad role model in more ways than one. 😏

@NichtRelevant What do you mean, "bad".... Take Pernod Ricard, for example—it’s on sale today because of poor numbers and modest prospects. Then you’ve got something to drink, grab some snacks to go with it, and your healthy lifestyle is complete. And if nothing else works, there’s always Novo or Elli 😇🤫

@Dividendenopi Perfect suggestions—I actually have McDonald's on my watchlist. I don't have any alcohol-related stocks—not because I don't like it, but because the younger generation just doesn't drink nearly enough. 🧨😉

Good morning, ☕ Yeah, I know what that’s like—cutting losses, continuing to invest, and hoping for the best.
Unfortunately, this has cost me years’ worth of returns.
Sell, learn from the experience, move on to the next stock.

@Smudeo That's the right way to do it—the problem is, I'm totally resistant to taking advice. 😅

That makes me wonder what you see there that’s prompting you to buy more. Do you think all the issues are off the table—that they no longer pose a risk?

Then, if you’re convinced…why wait until now, when prices are relatively high? What signal prompted you to act—or, rather, what was holding you back before?

(I’m in it myself, head in the sand, just holding on—my average cost is just under 36. It was deep in the red for a long time, down to 20€. Now it’s nice and green. “Patience (just looking the other way) seems to have paid off here.)

@Ghoscht I can't really answer that in such a rational way. I'll give it a try anyway:

A long time ago, I had already bought a little more of the stock, and from there the price dropped quite a bit. So I waited to see how this whole wave of lawsuits over glyphosate would play out. Even though the stock price has risen significantly again, it’s only now becoming reasonably clear to me that the glyphosate chapter can most likely be closed. And if that’s the case, then I do see the possibility that Bayer will return to its former strength—and the corresponding stock prices—over a period of 2 to 5 years.

Don't worry about it. So, what's your current position at Bayer?

@MikeUpegui

Position size: 375 shares
New cost basis: 66.19 euros
Current price: 48.50 euros
Current “performance”: -26.74%

I’ve been down as much as about -70% before, since some of the shares were purchased prior to the merger with Monsanto. Perhaps a gradual resolution of the Monsanto lawsuits might now offer some hope for a recovery. After all, the stock HAS actually risen nicely when you look at the last few months. YTD it’s up 27%, and the one-year gain is 73%. It’s just a bummer when, like me, you started out at prices above 80 euros.

I’m taking it with a sense of gallows humor. There’s no point in getting upset. And when you look at the portfolio as a whole, there’s bound to be a stock here and there that’s taken a nosedive.
