The space company SpaceX , with its satellite operator Starlink, is challenging established U.S. mobile carriers such as T-Mobile US and Verizon . SpaceX On Thursday, it agreed to purchase a nationwide portfolio of low-frequency spectrum to offer mobile connections directly from space to smartphones in the future.

The seller of the 800-megahertz frequencies is the private equity firm Grain Management, which is divesting its entire portfolio. Financial details were not disclosed.

With this acquisition, SpaceX, led by the entrepreneur, Elon Musk one of the biggest technical hurdles for satellite-based mobile networks. Low-frequency bands can penetrate obstacles such as walls or trees more effectively. They are intended to complement Starlink Mobile’s existing global 2-gigahertz spectrum, which is designed for high bandwidths. The deal still requires approval from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

The move caused unease on the stock market, as investors fear an aggressive price war in the already saturated U.S. mobile market. Shares of T-Mobile US, Verizon and AT&T fell.

Earlier this week, the FCC also approved the application for Starlink Mobile’s second generation of satellites. This allows SpaceX to launch 15,000 satellites into space that are optimized for the 2-gigahertz spectrum worldwide.

The article makes it seem as though satellites can now magically penetrate walls. They can't. It simply gives him the ability to install and operate cell towers.

@topicswithhead He's just an ordinary guy, but you can see the impact a news story like that has on the markets.

@topicswithhead @Dividendenopi We've already seen this with the energy figures. When Elon announced that he would produce the turbines himself.

@Dividendenopi Well, this approach makes sense in that it can still be cheaper overall. He only needs the towers in cities. He can cover the villages largely with satellites.

We talked about it a few days ago—just one news report, and the telecom sector is going crazy. But I had a hunch several months ago that SpaceX would start putting pressure on the market at some point... that's why I sold half of my VZ position.

It kind of bugs me that everything goes haywire every time Musk makes a statement of intent.
Sure, he’s incredibly successful. But he still has to actually make it all happen. And not everything he announces actually happens—or happens at the pace he makes it seem like it will.

$AMT It seems they're happy to build or operate any cell towers that may be necessary, even for 🤡.
