IQM Achieves a New Breakthrough

An automated state preparation routine and an improved calibration protocol maintain fidelity above the entanglement threshold during full-scale operation, and cloud users now have access to this full system performance.

ESPOO, Finland--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- IQM Quantum Computers (Nasdaq: IQMX), a global leader in superconducting quantum computers, announced today that the cloud-accessible IQM Emerald system has fully entangled all 54 qubits on the chip simultaneously.

This result demonstrates that the system’s computational quality is maintained even when all qubits are in use simultaneously. IQM’s cloud customers now have access to precisely this full chip performance, allowing their computations to utilize the entire processor rather than just a portion of it.

IQM measured: A fidelity of 0.515 for 40 qubits without readout error mitigation (Readout Error Mitigation, REM) and 0.516 for all 54 qubits with REM applied—both figures exceed the classical threshold of 0.500 that distinguishes true entanglement from noise.

These results are among the strongest ever reported for a commercially available quantum computer and provide customers with access to state-of-the-art, high-quality processors. Previously, in a comparable demonstration on the IQM Emerald, a user could reliably utilize about 30 qubits within a single algorithm. Studies on large quantum chips are often limited to a fraction of the available qubits (usually 10 to 20), even when the hardware has significantly more. Emerald’s result demonstrates an alternative: an entire processor working together on a single computation.

“Entangling the entire chip network means that every single qubit and every connection between them must function correctly within the same circuit. Crucial to this success was a smarter approach to preparing the state itself, as well as the choice of gate sequence to minimize idle time,” said Craig Ciesla, CTO of IQM Quantum Computers. “Our existing and future cloud customers now have the opportunity to benefit from the very tools and system performance that made this breakthrough possible.”

A Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state—a standard benchmark for large-scale entanglement—was used for the demonstration and was prepared across the entire IQM Emerald processor. The result was made possible by a smarter, automated state-preparation routine. This routine selects the best two-qubit gates, balances gate fidelity against qubit idle time, and determines both the qubits and the order of the gates in such a way that idle time is minimized during state preparation. IQM measured a fidelity of 0.515 for 40 qubits without readout error mitigation (REM) and 0.516 for all 54 qubits with REM —both values exceed the classical threshold of 0.500, which distinguishes true entanglement from noise.

The result builds on approximately one year of hardware and calibration work by IQM’s technical teams. This includes an updated calibration methodology, an improved gate set, and the ongoing use of error reduction tools such as dynamical decoupling and qubit selection. These improvements led to a reduction in the error rate for quantum operations on the processor by up to 50%.

The automated state preparation routine is part of IQM’s broader efforts to automate the operation of quantum computers. This development, together with IQM’s AI-driven agent-based calibration work, is part of broader efforts to automate the tuning of quantum systems.
