getquin Daily Summary 16.08.2022

Hello getquin,

today we talk about Philips and the legal dispute between Ben & Jerry's and Unilever. Also included is the purchase of new aircraft from $AAL (+0,83 %) and the EC of Walmart and Home Depot!

Europe🌍:

1st change of leadership at Philips

Medical technology specialist Philips is currently struggling with a number of difficulties: class action lawsuits are currently being filed in the U.S., supply chains are compromised, and the millions of ventilator recalls are weighing on earnings and image. In addition, the share price has fallen by a further 40% since the beginning of the year.

Now, under a new CEO, things are supposed to start looking up again. On Tuesday, Philips made a surprise announcement that Roy Jakobs will succeed Frans van Houten as of Oct. 15. Van Houten, who has led the Dutch delegation for the past twelve years, will serve as a transitional advisor until the end of April.

2nd dispute between Ben & Jerry's and Unilever shows the risks of losing control

The lawsuit between Ben & Jerry's and Unilever (ULVR.L) shines a spotlight on an issue affecting a growing number of purpose-driven brands: how to preserve their identity after being acquired by a major consumer conglomerate.

In 2000, the company bought Ben & Jerry's for $326 million with an unusual condition: The Vermont-based ice cream maker would retain its independent board of directors, responsible for managing its social and political identity.

Ben & Jerry's now believes that commitment was breached after the company's plan to stop selling ice cream in the Israeli-occupied West Bank caused a furor and eventually led Unilever to reach an agreement to sell the brand's Israeli business.

This is the second firm order in the last two years for Boom, which is still years away from building its first commercial aircraft. United Airlines last year committed to buying 15 Overture aircraft.

Music streaming service from RTL

RTL Germany is adding a music streaming service to its video streaming offering. As the company announced in Cologne on Tuesday, a music app with more than 90 million tracks will launch next Wednesday. The whole thing is a step on the way to turning the RTL+ streaming platform into a cross-genre all-in-one service.

So far, moving image-heavy streaming services like Netflix, Joyn and Disney+ have been widely used. With the super platform, RTL wants to set itself apart from the competition.

I can't find much solid information about the agreements between Boom and UAL / AAL. Presumably this is more PR than a firm deal. After all, there is not even a flyable aircraft.
