DOE and AMD Announce $1 Billion Supercomputing Partnership

The U.S. Department of Energy has partnered with $AMD (-0,28 %) in a $1 billion deal to build two next-generation supercomputers designed to advance research in energy, health, and defense.

The first system, Lux, will go live within six months, powered by AMD’s new MI355X AI chips, delivering three times the AI performance of current systems. The second, Discovery, built on MI430 chips, is scheduled for 2029.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the systems will help accelerate progress in fusion energy, drug discovery, and national security. The DOE will host the machines, while AMD, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and Oracle will provide hardware and shared computing resources.
