Day trading for beginners 📈📉

$ZAL (-1 %) As a supplement to my trading articles, an example of today's price movement of Zalando. If you are interested in trading and would like to get a taste of day trading, you can start by looking at patterns like the following.

Stock screener: We are looking for shares with a gap (=price jump), further on one is then oriented to the VWAP (Volume Weighted Average Price) of the session (=day).

Wait for the start of trading and see how the market moves. There is usually a phase of consolidation following the gap at the start of trading. If the price then points upwards at the VWAP, this would be a stock for a potential entry. Watch out for higher highs and higher lows! The SL (= stop loss) can be set at the lowest low of the consolidation.

In classic day trading, you can then go swimming for the rest of the day, e.g. today, either the SL blows you out or you close the trade 10 minutes before the close of trading. Depending on your preference, you can also work with trailing SL.

⚠️ACHTUNG: As often recommended, if you try out trading setups, always start with paper trading! Only go into real money when you achieve sustainable positive trades with your setup.

Edit / Addendum 30.06.2025 after close of trading:

Finally, the status or chart picture at the close of trading - the book is always easiest to read from behind 😂 Joking aside, you should always analyze your trades.

What has happened during the day?

Around 11:30 there was an intraday trend break, the upward trend was broken, visible through the "lower low". From then on it was only a sideways trend with a slight downward tendency.

If the trade had been a classic day trade, we would have exited with a slight gain at €28.13 at the close of trading.

If you had chosen the Trailling SL option, you would have closed the trade at around 11:30 with a slightly better price at €28.36.

What is ultimately better - getting out at the close of trading in the traditional way or hedging with a trailing SL - is something that can probably be discussed endlessly - there is no "right" or "wrong" answer.

From my point of view, the important thing is to decide on a method and apply it consistently. It will go one way or the other. If prices fall at the end of the day, then a trailing SL would have been better, if prices rise again during the course of the day, then you have reduced your profits with the trailing SL 🤷‍♂️

I took advantage of the good price performance in the morning to take a second tranche of the existing position - entry is marked in the chart - and did not sell - I let Zalando run a little further as a swing trade. I'll keep you informed about this trade when the time comes.

Did you go in there?

@Multibagger Yes, although for me it was the 2nd trade - ZAL is actually a swing trade for me (it is not sold at the close of trading). I already had 120 shares and added another 100 today at €27.79.

But the chart picture was once again perfect for day trading - great for explaining the gap - VWAP setup. Theoretically, I could close this tranche again today (as a classic day trade). But I will let it continue to run 😉

@TomTurboInvest Is there a possibility to exchange ideas with you and to understand and define strategies more precisely so that a kind of handout is created? Lg

@MCKrummel-Divi-Holding The intention of my trading posts was to show a bit that you can also earn money with a serious approach to trading. To do some marketing, so to speak, for trading, which often has a negative connotation here 😅
Due to demand, I post my current trades, such as this Zalando trade, from time to time, as time allows, and try to explain the system I use to trade as best I can.
Apart from here, I am not active on social media on the subject of trading, so I am not really available. I also can't offer or replace trading education, at most I can arouse interest🫣
But there is some good content about trading on YT, so if you are interested in my recommendation, please feel free to contact me. I just don't want to recommend a YT channel without being asked, as I have nothing to do with it.

@TomTurboInvest Thank you very much.
So I understand that correctly. You look in the screener for stocks that push out in the morning 9 o'clock wait until 9:30-9:45 and see that you see and hit a rise via vwap and then go in. Set sl etc logically after managing your own risk. Do you pay attention to anything else? How is your setup in TradingView?

@MCKrummel-Divi-Holding in principle exactly the same, either during the day on Xetra, or from the afternoon onwards on the US market. Of course, the price action has to be right in detail, there has to be a clear rise, otherwise I don't trade. If I don't catch the entry at the VWAP, then I don't trade any more.
My setup in TradingView is quite simple.
Day trade entry as described, for swing trades I have described it in my trading series, should be part 3 and part 4.
I also showed my screener settings in one of my last posts (screenshot), have a look at my posts on $INOD and $OUST

PS: in day trading I use the 5min or 10min chart, which may still be important. For swing trades I rarely go below 1 hour

How much total return have you made with trading so far?

@user28461 I'd have to take a look at my "single source of truth" (Excel) 😉 - I've been doing this for years - but on the side. My focus is always on the monthly or monthly average per year, as I see trading as another source of income, so I separate it out manually and include it in my income, such as my salary. On average over the last few years, I've been fairly stable at around €3,000 net per month (i.e. minus all costs such as KEST, broker fees, costs for the trading tool, etc...). - sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less.
Trading also feeds my B&H Core and has already financed an investor's apartment.

@TomTurboInvest 3000 net with how much stake approx.

Imagen de perfil
@assistantregionalmanager for short-term trading I trade with a volume of approx. 50k€ - and this volume "turns" permanently over the year... On average, this volume generates a net return of around +6% per month.

PS: I ONLY trade shares, no CFDs, no derivatives, no Forex, nothing leveraged.

@TomTurboInvest How long do you hold a share on average?
1
Imagen de perfil
@user28461 phew, I can't say that off the top of my head.

I come from a different approach -> I have a defined entry point, an SL based on my risk management and defined TPs (take profits). The holding period then depends on how quickly the SL or TP is reached, which can be quick, but can also take a few weeks. I often enter larger positions in tranches, and I don't always take the whole position out when it comes to the TP. That's why I can't give you an average. The holding periods tend to be shorter, but this is also due to the current higher volatility.

How do you come up with your setups? Do you orient yourself on standard models, test everything possible or do you start from a market logic?
1
Imagen de perfil
@Epi the VWAP setup is actually quite an old setup, I would assign it to the market logic - volume follows volume - via the VWAP you can see nicely how the market is positioned (except for the first half hour/hour, as the VWAP restarts daily per session).

For day trading, this is actually the classic - there are countless YT videos on this setup, which are also several years old. As I said, of course, only enter when there is appropriate price action and volume. If it bobs around undefined after the consolidation, then you don't trade. If the picture is reversed, you could make the same trade on "short".

I have already pointed out such patterns recently, in the post you will also find the screener settings. You can "monitor" for a few days, you will find these patterns😁 https://getqu.in/pcSokD/

@TomTurboInvest Where can you find stocks with a gap? I am looking for good sources of information.

@Fambu I search for shares using the TradingView share screener. You can set all the criteria you find interesting as filters. Absolute values, % values as well as indicators.

In the post I have a screenshot of my filters https://getqu.in/pcSokD/ https://getqu.in/pcSokD/
