Europe🌍:

1. no more production in Saarlouis

In three years, the Ford plant in Saarlouis will no longer produce cars. The European subsidiary of the American automaker confirmed this on Wednesday. The plant in Saarland beat out Valencia, Spain, in the internal competition for future electric vehicle production. The current Focus model will continue to be produced in Saarlouis until around mid-2025.

Ford's European Managing Director Stuart Rowley justified the choice in an interview with Handelsblatt, saying that Valencia "offers better opportunities for the future, especially from a financial perspective." In terms of material costs and supplier base, the Spanish car plant had scored better. The wage level, which is lower in Valencia than in Saarlouis, also reflects this.

2. inflation figures united kingdom

Inflation in the United Kingdom reached a new 40-year high of 9.1% in May, up slightly from the previous month.

The Office for National Statistics in the United Kingdom said Tuesday that consumer price inflation reached its highest level since 1982, at 9.1%, up slightly from April. According to chief economist Grant Fitzner, "the continued modest rise in food prices and record high petrol prices were offset by a year-on-year fall in clothing costs and a reversal in the often volatile price of video games."

3rd fine for Bayer

Yesterday afternoon in the Supreme Court, the decision was made that Bayer, a German pharmaceutical company, must pay a fine of $25 million, due to carcinogens in weed killers. The case has been ongoing since 2019, and it was a surprising twist that President Joe Biden's administration had already advised the Supreme Court against taking the case. Immediately after the decision was announced, Bayer shares fell 4.4%.

Re 1: If Saarlouis won out over Valencia, why is production being discontinued there? 😅
